Hounds and their humans: Gordo & Anna

Dedicated dog owner Anna runs the popular Instagram account @gordothekelpie as well as keeping a blog about life with her charismatic hound. For hiking-with-pups tips to dog-friendly-cafe recommendations, as well as heartfelt outpourings of love for her very photogenic hound, she is well worth a follow. As avid fans, we had some burning questions about three-year-old Gordo’s hobbies and habits.

Social handle: @gordothekelpie
Age: 3
Breed: Kelpie

We love the funny nicknames people give their pets. What is Gordo known as?
He mostly gets Gordito, which means ‘little fat one’ in Spanish!

How does he like to start the day?
Quickly! As soon as I move, he is good to go! We always head straight out for a walk to hopefully enjoy the morning sunshine and a pinecone or three.

What was the first command he learned?
He started with learning his name and how to sit. Since then he has learnt so many and is happy to perform them for most people.

The one Gordo finds hardest to follow?
Quiet…we aren’t a fan of being quiet, especially when someone comes to the house or we get super excited!

What would Gordo’s perfect day look like?
Waking up in a tent in the mountains with a beautiful sunrise and then hiking, exploring, and swimming all day. Preferably this would end with a beautiful sunset and a repeat the next morning!

Favourite snack?
Salmon Skins for sure! When a package of these arrives at home, he will sit and bark at the box and won’t leave it alone until I open it. Let’s just say they are a hit! His second best is a classic – he appears at my side the moment I open the cheese packet and needs to take his tax.

Most adorable habit?
I love how excited he gets to see his favourite people and dogs. He just can’t contain his excitement, which is really beautiful and special to see.

The weirdest thing he does?
One thing I find equal parts weird and endearing is that he will destroy any soft toy given to him - unless it's a Q-Monster Ball! Those he will keep in perfect(ish) condition. We still have his first one from when he was six months old!

The thing most likely to get his tail wagging?
Definitely favourite people and dogs. He also adores searching for a lost pinecone. He will find the perfect one for me to throw, then will set off searching for it. He’s happiest if he really has to look hard for it.

Most likely to be told off for…
Barking at motorbikes. He absolutely hates them because they’re loud and appear suddenly.  Aside from that, he sometimes gets in trouble for not bringing the ball back. He knows I am likely to pop it away in my bag so he will give me the side-eye while looking for another person to throw it instead. Very cheeky!

Favourite snoozing spot?
My bed while I’m working. He isn’t worried if there is sun or not, just as long as he is close and can keep an ear on me…
