How to Hound: A Feeding Guide

Freeze-dried raw meat has tons of nutritional benefits – and just as many ways of serving it up to your best friend.

Nothing gets a dog’s chops going faster than raw meat. Dogs are hard-wired to eat raw protein after all, and boy do they know how to show their appreciation for it!

Beef muscle and liver are all great sources of lean and naturally delicious protein for a hound, while tripe, whole fish and fish skins can provide a boost of vital nutrients when needed.

With the Hound range, you’ve got a bunch of delicious ways to top up a dog’s usual diet with bonus raw protein. Best of all for the ick-inclined, it’s mess-free! Dogs might like their meat raw and wriggling, but most humans – not so much.

Here are some ways to mix it up at meal time with the Hound range.

Build a bowl with Hound

To add variety, crunch and flavour to your dog’s dinner, top it with freeze-dried protein. Think, for example, a ¾ serving of their usual kibble, a couple of Liver Lot slices, a sprinkle of Salmon Crumble and drizzled with bone broth – fit for a king!

Treat em’ healthy

Switch the calorie-laden, filler-filled processed dog treats for a natural, raw alternative. Chicken Chips, Beef Chip and Steak Bites are all low fat, high protein options for dogs that need to watch the girth. All in flavour, say ‘aye’.

Target dietary needs

Like us, dogs will have different dietary requirements over their lifetime. As they age, issues like sore joints, gut sensitivity and weight gain may crop up and serving up extra portions of helpful nutrients with their usual food can help in times of need. Salmon and mackerel are full of omega-3 fatty acids for joint and skin health, while Tripe Slices contain partially digested greens, chock full of naturally occurring minerals and vitamins.

Hydration helper

You can lead a dog to water but sometimes they just won’t drink. (Ever tried explaining to your dog “this is your last chance” on a hike? They never get it) For dogs who don’t drink enough, sprinkling chunks of freeze-dried raw meat into their water bowl can help to boost water intake.

Training aid

When training a puppy, calorie-creep can be a real issue if using processed treats because of the grains and fillers they include. Small bites of pure raw meat is a much healthier option and in freeze-dried form, they’re easy to snap into size. What better incentive for a dog to sit, stay and lie down than raw meat?

For home-alone hounds

With busy-minded or ‘velcro’ dog breeds, distraction and enrichment activities can help to pass the time until you’re home. Freeze-dried meat can be crumbled and sprinkled over a lickimat or hidden inside toys to keep tongues and noses busy. There are all kinds of ways to keep ‘em busy!

All Hound proteins are sourced from New Zealand farms and fisheries and freeze-dried in human-grade facilities. What this means for a dog’s food is that they’ll receive all the nutritious benefits of raw meat minus the mess and fuss of its original form.

Note: we know how to get the best out of pure New Zealand meat but you know what’s best for your pup. Always follow your vet’s recommendations to ensure their diet contains everything they need.
