Hounds and their Humans: Frost and Cher

Frost and Cher

Whether he knows it or not, two-year-old Frost is kind of a big deal on social media.

Cher, his dedicated human, keeps their Instagram account @lifeofahuskybork updated with stunning reports of adventures in the Otago wilds and handy tips for dog training and behaviour management.

We first connected with Cher over her preference for healthy wholefood treats as training rewards for Frost. And since our team loves a dog-directed roadie too, we’ve got plenty in common, including some stellar North Otago spots for a dog gallop.

Here’s a little more from Cher about her handsome shepsky – a big guy with main character energy!

How does Frost like to start the day?
If every day started with a big adventure in the wilderness or out making friends, Frost would be living the dream! We’ve never had a standard schedule though, so he handles the disappointments well.

What was the first command he learned?
Our first cue was ‘touch’, the perfect way to keep a baby doggo close and engaged!

The hardest to follow?
Leave it…but only when ‘it’ is another dog and he really wants to go say hello.

What would his perfect day look like?
Friends, adventures and snacks! There is nothing more a dog needs...is there?

Favourite snack?
At the moment it’s Topflite Hound Salmon Skins, but the Salmon Steaks might overtake the skins soon! Of course, the cheese tax is extremely high on the list too!

Most adorable habit?
The way he paws at me to give me some affection and get some back. He’s not a super cuddly, in-your-face dog most of the time, so it’s really sweet when he sticks his paw on my arm just to be close!

The weirdest thing he does?
The boops he gives people when he’s trying to get a treat – although they can leave bruises! He can be very forceful and persistent.

The thing most likely to get his tail wagging?
I can leave him inside and go to the letterbox and he’ll be wagging it like mad when I come back, but top of the list is seeing his friends, of course.

Most likely to be told off for…
Ignoring ‘leave it’ when we’re on a walk and we come across a dog that’s simply showing no interest. We are getting there, though – the pros and cons of a social dog!

Favourite snoozing spot?
Anywhere, as long as it’s not too far from mum. Saying that, at 9:30pm, that’s it, he’s off to bed. He won’t sleep on a bed, though – he prefers the floor.

Any nicknames?
He is also known as Frosty, Fros-T-dog, and Dog (this is reserved for when his ears have fallen off).
